Fostering Inclusivity: How Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Matter to Young Alumni

Engaging the Next Generation: Understanding Young Alumni Trends- Part 2

Young alumni are increasingly prioritizing diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) in their engagement with their alma mater. The Alumni Attitude Study highlights a significant interest in DEI among young alumni, with a 21% higher interest compared to older alumni. All alumni see “equity of degree” as the thing that matters most to them about their alma mater (read our previous blog on the subject for more). Younger alumni define “equity of degree” primarily by DEI-initiatives, availability of scholarships, and accomplishments of students, while older alumni define it primarily by history/traditions and accomplishments of alumni.

Importance of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion

Young alumni’s increased interest in DEI underscores the need for institutions to emphasize these values when developing program for younger alumni. By fostering a diverse and inclusive environment for alumni, universities can create a sense of belonging for younger alumni, which can positively impact their willingness to support their alma mater. This includes ensuring diverse representation in leadership roles and organizing events that celebrate different cultures and perspectives.

Strategies for Inclusivity

To foster inclusivity, institutions should focus on creating inclusive programs and events. This might involve organizing cultural festivals, diversity workshops, or panel discussions on social justice issues.

Institutions can also leverage digital platforms to promote DEI initiatives, as they are 89% more likely to be used by younger alumni than older alumni. Sharing stories of diverse alumni achievements and highlighting university efforts to enhance diversity and inclusion can inspire young alumni and encourage their engagement. For example, universities can use social media to share updates about diversity initiatives and achievements, fostering a sense of community and inclusivity.

Impact on Engagement

By emphasizing DEI, institutions can enhance engagement among young alumni. This demographic is more likely to feel connected and valued when they see their alma mater prioritizing inclusivity. As a result, they are more inclined to participate in alumni activities, provide feedback, and support the institution in various ways.

Aligning with Young Alumni Values

Young alumni are not only interested in DEI, but also in lifelong learning opportunities and professional development. They express a strong desire for continuous education, with a 56% higher interest in having these opportunities available. By aligning these interests with DEI initiatives, institutions can create a comprehensive engagement strategy that resonates with young alumni values.

Digital Engagement and Inclusivity

Young alumni show a higher interest in participating in online activities and social media, compared to older alumni. Institutions can leverage this by developing dedicated alumni websites and online communities that promote inclusivity and diversity. Creating online forums for discussing DEI issues or sharing experiences can foster a sense of belonging among diverse alumni.

Building a Supportive Community

Creating a supportive community involves recognizing the achievements and contributions of young alumni. Institutions can celebrate career milestones and community service through recognition programs, fostering a sense of appreciation among young alumni. This approach not only enhances alumni satisfaction, but it also encourages loyalty and future involvement.

Fostering inclusivity is essential for engaging young alumni. By prioritizing DEI initiatives and creating a welcoming environment, institutions can strengthen their bonds with this demographic, fostering a lifelong connection that benefits both the institution and its graduates. This approach not only enhances engagement, but it also encourages future support and participation.
