What Alumni Value Most

Over the past 20 years, the PEG Ltd. team has surveyed thousands of alumni, and a clear theme has emerged: alumni want to see the value of their degrees increase over time. We call this concept “equity of degree.” Alumni view their education as a lifelong investment and expect their alma mater to help that investment appreciate-not just immediately after graduation, but throughout their lives.

Alumni as Shareholders

At the Alumni Professionals of Texas 2024 conference, Texas State University President Dr. Kelly Damphousse captured this sentiment perfectly, noting that “alumni see themselves as shareholders.” This perspective highlights the shared enterprise between graduates and their institutions, emphasizing the ongoing responsibility universities have to nurture the value and reputation of their degrees.

Here’s Rob Shoss, President and Managing Consultant of PEG, Ltd. describing the importance of value and respect for degree:

The Lasting Impact of Degree Value

In today’s competitive job market and rapidly changing economy, the value of a degree is more important than ever. Alumni know their credentials play a crucial role in career prospects, earning potential, and professional success. This reality drives their keen interest in seeing their alma mater deliver a high-quality education that prepares graduates for the demands of the modern workforce.

What Shapes Degree Equity?

Our Alumni Attitude Study reveals that degree equity is shaped by far more than just job placement rates. Alumni consistently cite factors such as:

While alumni may prioritize these factors differently based on life stage and demographics, they all contribute to a holistic assessment of degree equity.

Ultimately, alumni expect their alma mater to be an active partner in enhancing the long-term value of their degrees. By investing in academic excellence, fostering a vibrant and inclusive community, and celebrating achievements across campus, institutions can ensure that their graduates’ investment continues to pay dividends for years to come.
